When installing aluminum gutters you will be faced with two options for fasteners, screws or rivets. Some installers will utilize screws because they are self drilling and easy to install. However, as with other threaded fasteners, they are subject to striping, or loosening up plus they may not be as visually pleasing as rivets. Aluminum gutter rivets are the other option for fastening gutters. They do require a hole be drilled as they are not self drilling. They also require a rivet setting tool, usually hand or muscle powered, or electric or battery powered cordless tool. There are a few important features rivets will provide, which could be considered advantages over screws. First, once they are set in place the fastened parts will remain fastened as rivets do not loosen up like threaded fasteners may. Second, rivets are easy to install and can’t be stripped or over torqued like screws. Third, rivets offer a lower profile appearance and just about blend into the gutter, especially when painted a matching color. Fourth, rivets do not present sharp, drill points like screws and after they are set or installed, their backside shape is smoother and much less likely to prick fingers or snag leaves.
